Well I’ve been dating this guy for 5 months-ish now, we both are working towards a relationship but we’re taking it slow. He just broke up with his recent ex like early this year and he talked about how distant his ex was so that’s why they broke up - end of story with this one. The thing is, he keeps bringing up his previous ex from 6 years ago (like oh my ex used to do this, oh her mom used to do this, oh my ex hated this blablabla).

I have a feeling he’s not over that one ex because he keeps bringing her up in every conversation, I can’t even take him out to certain places bcs it reminds him too much of that one ex. He said the relationship was very toxic and he told me he had a lot of trauma from it, he’s very open about his trauma tho. I love him and I wanna help him get over his trauma but it kinda hurts knowing that I can’t compete with his ex since every little thing reminded him of her… what do you think I should do? Sorry for the rant lol

I'd suggest for him to get therapy. Let a professional help him. Does he have like ptsd? Trauma... that could explain it. As much as I HATE my ex... I use to talk about him all the time and it wasn't because I was still in love or what have you. It was more of a trauma bond than anything. So he needs to really heal before getting into a new relationship.

Yeah I agree I do think it’s trauma bonding. He told me about how toxic she was and how toxic he was in that relationship and he’s still trying to heal from it. He went to a therapist but he said it didn’t help. Do you think it would be better off for me to stick around and be there for him or should I just walk away and just remain as friends?

He needs to stick to therapy. Healing doesn't happen over night.
So I'd suggest remaining friends... but a little distant. Because you'll just end up being a friend he comes to to heal and maybe leave you damaged. I say this cause there was a guy pursuing me but I just broke up with my ex who still had my "heart" but not my head. I totally put this good guy in the friendzone. And he couldnt come out from that

That’s what I’m afraid of lol I don’t wanna end up getting used as a free therapist and being put in the friendzone… I said this to him a while ago and he refused to let me go, he asked me to be patient with him bcs he wants to build a healthy relationship with me which is why we’re taking it slow now so that he can properly heal. I also want to take it slow bcs I just came out of a very long term relationship a year ago. I was thinking of giving him an ultimatum after a maybe 2-5 more months or is that too lenient?

Dont give him no ultimatum. Let him go and if he returns he is for you. What I mean by saying that is telling him you'll be there for him but you can't be around him like this and he hasn't healed.
