Instinct. Back in the cave days, if a guy was emotionally attached to a woman he would be less likely to just impregnate her and leave. And women caring for a child without any means of hunting for food are likely to strarve both her and the child. Having the father around to do the hunting reduces that likelihood and the man is more likely to stick around if there is an emotional connection.

Indeed, one could easily argue that much of civilization that has been built since those cave days was built to accommodate this instict rather than to correct it. Such an observation goes a long way towards explaining why people get so ravenous about abortions.
