Because they live on the continent of Asian, even though by ethnicity, they are not (East) Asian descent. I don't really get it either, but it's like that annoying bulls*it when people think "Americans" refers to people in Brazil and Chile and sh*t. "You're not wrong, but you're still an asshole."

  A few people (assholes) try to count both North and South American citizens as "Americans" and throw a bitchfit when someone refers to United States citizens as "Americans." They're insufferable.

Geography plays a part also another bit comes from the fact the British have referred to people living in Indian, Pakistan, Bangladesh etc as Asians.

Also on this site, when someone refers to an Asian I do not think of someone from China, Hong Kong etc, but someone from India, Pakistan etc.
