This guy who I personally find very attractive and view out of my league asked me to date him and I said to him afterwards “Is this a joke?”

Another person told me it was rude what I said.
I asked if he was joking because I found it surprising he would take interest in somebody like me

Yes a little. And he wouldn't have taken it that way, he probably took it the exact opposite as in you wouldn't be interested in someone like him. If a guy said that to you, wouldn't that be what you'd think?

It was a bit rude. You definitely could have worded it better or added something like "I thought you'd never ask" or "Yes I'd love to."
