Sometimes, you don’t need someone with a PhD to have an animated, intellectual conversation.

Did the gentleman care to get to know you at all? Ask any questions about yourself?

If he kept talking about himself and did not care to get to know you, it either implies that he is a self absorbed narcissist or a very ambitious person who needs to marry his work. Let’s just give him the benefit of the doubt for now, and say that he was immersed in his job and wanted to share his passions and goals with you.

I have had wondrous, intellectual debates with people who have had only an undergraduate degree.

not sure what to make of him he was fidgeting a lot and looking around the room a lot. althought he did share his fries with me. maybe he looks down at me because i only have a business degree

Maybe he wanted to impress you? He seems to have been nervous. Only nervous people fidget a lot. I do that when I’m anxious.

wellit was my friends that set me up with him and they said he seemed so prime and proper than usual

Give him another chance. It’s usually awkward during first dates, especially if it was a blind date. Maybe he was nervous. Ask him more questions. If you are bored of him talking about his work, try to change the topic politely by asking him questions

Some guys are really into their careers, and maybe he was trying to impress you - perhaps a bit too much.

Maybe he was trying to see if you guys have similar interests, which you obviously don't if you think he was boring and he was genuinely excited about what he was talking about.

Maybe he's full of himself and didn't let you get a word in edge-wise.

All depends on the kind of guy he is.

Did he recently get his degree? Maybe he was proud of it, or it had taken up so much of his time for many years that he didn't get the chance to experience much else in life so he doesn't have much to say.
