What does "casually dating" mean to you?

And what does it mean when a guy says "I'm happy just hanging out"

Preface: This guy knows that I am not looking to just hook up for any type of friends with benefits arrangement as it's not my style. He understands that I am looking to form a genuine connection and have a good time and he has agreed that he is on the same boat too.

Well if he feels that way, then the terms 'casual' or 'just happy to hangout' shouldn't be coming from him.
I think you are assuming he knows how you feel which would be a big mistake. You need to have a discussion and be very clear about your expectations. Again, if he knows he wouldn't be saying those things. I'm kind of shocked you aren't putting that together yourself.

Sounds like he's willing to go with the flow. But you are best to ask him directly exactly what he wants. Make sure you are on the same page. Don't assume anything. Especially if comments here get your mind in overdrive lol

Date by date sounds right but we had a confusing conversation and I think I scared him off and that worries me because I like the guy but it's really hard to tell where we're at right now

To me "causal dating" is just an overly glorified form of a meeting between two persons, who may or may not have romantic feeling for each other.
