If he asked you on a date, then he at least has interest in you. If you asked him and he said yes, same thing. You say you were awkward too. Do you not like him? A lot of the time, people get nervous and feel awkward. Instant chemistry is real, but much rarer than hollywood movies or fiction novels would like you to believe, expecting instant chemistry is setting yourself up for disappointment. Most relationships are built on mutual interests, trust, etc., with romantic compatibility mixed in. Being the largest or sole ingredient is not a solid foundation.

All first dates are awkward in some way. And some people have a more difficult time dealing with that. I wouldn’t read too much into it. Definitely go on a second date and see if he calms down more. I had a similar experience. This girl was perfectly nice, but she was nervous the whole night. The date went fine, but when I asked her if she wanted to go out again (in hopes that she would be more relaxed next time and not be so overwhelmed) she said “maybe, I’ll let you know” which obviously ended up being a no. Only reason I was disappointed is because I would have been excited to see her when she felt more comfortable.

I think chemistry should be felt on the first date. It should only increase or decrease from there the more you get to know each other. If not even a little chemistry is felt, I’d see that as a sign of incompatibility.

Not always sometimes things are just awkward on the first date. If you keep going on dates then things might get better. Sometimes just being nervous around someone I like makes me a little awkward
