This guy and I have dated in high school for a year which was eight years ago. Now that we are adults out of high school he has not stopped texting me to see what’s going on and if I’m dating. He will always text me saying I love you or I miss you. He told me three weeks before seeing me that he wants to marry me. I met up with him for the first time since seeing him in 2018 this weekend and he told me that he doesn’t want to do anything with me because he doesn’t want to fall in love or have anything serious.

If you want to consider it defeat, normally I'd expect you to consider it defeat if you got rejected but he gave you the advantage to reject him first by telling him you aren't interested, if you really liked him and expected something then yea that is somewhat a defeat
