Does having a relationship matter anymore because lots of people at my job says "that if I like someone I don't care if the have a relationship"?

I didn;t really have a girlfriend until I went away to college. I was 19. We never had sex but it was just really nice to have somebody to go to the movies with or just go get an ice cream cone. We had some pretty cool adventures together. Once we went to Canada. It was a lot of fun.
