How long is too long to wait to move a relationship forward?

Anonymous

I have known my B/F for 30 years now we share a 15 year old son. When I was 6 months pregnant he left me for another women. 7 years later he came crawling back into both mine and our son life ( in that 7 years he had no contact with either of us by his choice or his new partner at the time ) so when he decided 7 years later to walk back into our lives I was extremely hesitant however after approx 9 months I finally agreed and we ended out dating again. We have now been dating for 10 years. We do not live together and only see each other on weekends, except if we go away on holidays. In the last 10 years he has cheated on me twice and that has had me reluctant to permanently move in together undecided on what I do and don’t want ( I want more than it is now but don’t want to feel I have to accept all behaviours.. I do love him that’s why I have kept accepting / forgiving his behaviour.)

So Over the weekend I was helping him renovate his bathroom and kitchen he was asking my opinion on colours to choose etc, I was joking and said I might as well move in if I have all the say in colours etc and he had a look of horror on his face which made it clear he did not want me to move in ( not that I actually wanted to move in)

So my question is why do some males want to have you as their partner but won’t take the relationship to the next level of moving in together or getting engaged?
