Should I make the first move?

hi, I have a crush on a guy in my class. I really like him, should I make the first move? I don‘t want to do it in front of everyone else though, can I maybe give him a note? I‘ve never done this before but I don‘t want to miss my chance

First of all be aware that any written thing will be screenshotted or photographed and sent to his closest friends. So be aware that it would become public although they'll play it cool to not let you notice they "know".
If you do that in person when you are 1 on 1, he will report only the type of things you said (a confession) but won't remember or imitate exact words and tone.
Other than that it's more effective because it shows you confident and that you know what you want. A big mistake is to appear desperate, insecure or even crying while confessing because that shows you like a problem to manage rather than having something to offer.
There must be some birthday, some party, some groups activity you do around where you can get him one on one at some point I guess.
After a confession (written or spoken), anyway, expect him to be a bit confused and not ready, he will have to process for some days to be able to picture how things could be. If he gets intoxicated by those thoughts he may reciprocate you back later, so after the confession you should stay positive and not contact him much, to not put pressure on him.
All this doesn't mean you'll succeed though, unfortunately, but the way you confess can make a difference in chances. Real life + confidence/serenity/positivity is more impactful, especially in a cozy situation where you can be 1 on 1 for 5 minutes with no hurry to go elsewhere (like, don't do that while you are walking to school together etc).
