How to deal with a Dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde personality?

So I have a guy I'm sort of seeing. He wants to be with me though only when he's drunk and then when he's sober he just wants to be friends and it's giving me whiplash. I'm so tired of this back and forth and don't know what to do. I really want to be with him but it seems like he can only commit when he has beer goggles on.

Should I leave it be and move on or wait for him to commit sober?

He's not an alcoholic. He's gone through a lot in his life and I guess is afraid to commit because of the trauma he's suffered in his life. I'm trying to be there for him because I know what it's like to deal with something traumatic but at the same time it's taken a toll on me and I'm growing tired of waiting for him to step up and commit while sober. I don't have low self esteem. I'm just trying to be understanding.

He's not an alcoholic. He just drinks from time to time.
