Please, help me. How to text a guy without seeming desperate?

I recently have been in contact with someone I knew from childhood. I’ve been so interested in how his life has been but anytime we are on a call or text he keeps it very short. Basically he doesn’t really give me enough time to really talk. His response is always “I’m going to plan a day for us to get up”. Not like “I don’t wanna talk” type of way. But he’s in the middle of flipping a house so he is kind of busy. Which I understand. Also if I text him, he’ll respond maybe twice and then stops. But he constantly will say, text or call me whenever. But when I do, it’s short. I’m getting nothing from him. Meaning- I don’t know if he’s in a relationship, etc.
I feel like if I don’t reach out, I won’t hear from him. And if I do reach out- he’s always keeping in short and saying “I’m going to plan a date.”
I want to be bold, in a cool playful way. But I do want to tell him that I genuinely am curious how his life is but I don’t want to feel like I’m desperate for his attention. Like, I’m really curious as a friend how he’s been.
Any ideas on how to text him without seeming desperate for his attention?

He's living his life and he's already said what he's going to do. Just wait it out and be patient and with him. If you expect him to drop everything to pay attention to you then he might cut you off. Personally speaking, I have no tolerance for women like that.

One way might be to get a group of mutual friends together to do something and just invite him to go along with you and the others. Then if he doesn't come, no big deal. And you might find out more info.
