This guy I like texted me asking to hang out and I was out of town that weekend and jokingly stated back to him to make some room on his schedule for next week and he said all his days were free for me how do I text him back now that I’m back in town

Keep it simple, he's obviously got a thing for you so you know that he's probably not going to reject you. Send him a text saying, " I'm back in town finally. Do you still have time free for me?"

He'll probably say yes, and The ice is broken. Or he could say that he has a bunch of bullshit to do now, and he was just flirting without any intention earlier. Either way, it's better to have a bad answer than no answer

Yes, yes it is. Because you were the one that had to come back to town. If he were to text you asking after you it could make him look needy or clingy which generally are very uncomfortable things to be in the eyes of other people
