Why would a guy make a joke about falling in love with me?

I have a crush on this guy. We have been slowly talking for a few months.

He took me on a really nice date last night and we stayed up until 4 am just talking about everything family, our lives, our goals laughing it was great until we started kissing.
Then we cuddled and he said I’m falling In love with you and I felt panic.

I wasn’t expecting that and even before I could soak that in or blink he followed it with “ im just kidding “ and I just awkwardly played it off with him. Kind of made me feel weird though.

I could if responded to him kindly if I was given time but joking about that seems unfair. Why would a guy do this?

That makes sense I imagine I must not of realized in my moment of shock I didn’t realize how much he probably felt that on me probably instantly. I’m just so shy. I didn’t expect it and I actually feel that way about him. 😭
