Is online communication for months a good way to get to know people before meeting with them in person?

I met a guy once and then he went to another country to study a course. We kept in touch sending each other memes and making small talk for about 4 months. He recently came back and we have been talking about meeting up again. Is that a good foundation to form connections with people?
