A scientist is a person who performs scientific extermination, data collection/analysis, and often present said research for publication. But having a formal education isn’t a requirement. There is even a term for people to have taught themselves, autodidact. Benjamin Franklin for example was self-educated. Gregor Mendel was a catholic monk, now known as the father of genetics for his experiments. Hell Galileo was a priest before the catholic church kicked him out for his own work.

The opposite is also true, hell I have a STEM degree, but I am not a scientist.

Yes but it's almost impossible today , at those times science was just a baby, now you need years of training , learning before performing anything actual , you can learn it at home too and at university without much help from professors but in most cases it's impossible. Scientists now a days means will have not one but multiple stem degrees but not all stem degree holders are not scientists.

No, still not impossible today, I just used old ass examples because I doubt you would know. The biggest issue these days isn’t finding the information online, its being able to differentiate between what is a valid source, and what is complete bullshit.
