Why is my ex still slightly supportive of me when I go through tough times?

Because he doesn't have to hate you to break up with you. I feel like people have a messed up idea of what love is.

When you date someone, you're not trying to find out if you love eachother. I could love my family, I could love my dog, I could love the keys to my first car I keep in my dresser.

We think about it as different for a romantic partner because of all these stigmas and traditions but technically you don't even really need to love someone for it to be a good idea to try dating in the first place.

You're trying to find someone to spend the rest of your life with and start a family and belasically be your best and most trusted friend. Love is complimentary to that. One compels the other.

So maybe he felt the relationship romantically was not something he saw a future in but it doesn't mean he didn't spend all that time connecting and building up feelings for someone just to cut them off.

He's just a healthy person.

The feeling of attachment anyone gets when they've had good times with someone. Or something for that matter.

Just because a relationship ends that doesn't mean that he doesn't care or wants you to fall on hard times or fail.
Yes, we have all be in a relationship where you would be happy if they burst into flames, but not every relationship ends that way.
For whatever reason it was time to move on, but you were a part of each other's lives, and you can still care about someone without want to be with that person.
he is probably very empathetic towards others, including you.

I think when you love someone and it doesn't work out. The feelings of love never really go away. I think love just transforms into a different type of love and that energy is transferred to something else. You can love someone as a fellow human but not romantically. I feel that way about all of my ex's. I still care about them as people and don't want anything bad to happen, even the abusive ones. I hope they heal and move on. Your ex probably feels the same. He probably doesn't want to see you hurting, but isn't interested in the romance. I say probably because there could be different reasons. Really depends on a lot of things. Generally speaking I wouldn't hold onto it

Just because he's dating someone new doesn't mean he cannot still care for you. You were part of his life once and you probably have a very special place in his heart and he doesn't have any type of hate towards you.

That means there are no feelings there other than friendship which may mean it was never love. I don’t think a lot of men like seeing their exes with someone else even if they don’t stand in her way.

If you were together for a long time and didn't end on horrible terms its probably because he cares about you as a friend and doesn't want you to suffer..

Each of the women I have had a relationship with has been a decent person. The romances failed, but I do not hate them or wish them ill.

He could just not interact with me though. That still wouldn’t mean he hates me.

I should have phrased it differently. Hate was too strong of a word. There was zero animosity on my part and none from what I can tell on the part of any of my partners. Maybe a bit of disappointment, so some distance for awhile, but it has always been clear that the romance just was not working.
