I had girlfriends from the time I was 16, but didn't start think about settling down until I was in my earlyish 30s.

The first one I fell totally in love with was when I was 36. She loved me, too. She was 30. We wound up living together for over a year. But we couldn't be life partners for reasons that I can't explain here.

After we separated, I was a mess. It took me over a year to pull myself together and get on with life.

At that point, I was serious about finding a wife, so I joined a pre-internet dating service. In their office, there were bookshelves full of ring binders - blue for guys and pink for girls. They were arranged in alphabetical order according to first names.

Each person had a page. On one side was a bio. On the other side was a photo that had been taken at a photo shoot by the agency, so the photos weren't doctored.

What I did was start with the 'As' and flip through looking at photos. If I saw one I liked, I read the bio. You could select up to 5 per week. You submitted a card to the desk and they sent it to the person you wanted to meet. If they wanted to meet you, they responded 'yes' and the company gave each of you each other's phone numbers so that you could talk, make a date, or whatever.

Anyway, that's how I eventually met my wife.
