When dating, how important is it for your value or worth the tradition that the guy is set to be the one that pays?

Have been dating people from different cultures, and for one woman it was almost offensive if a man was going to pay, like she could earn money and pay for herself, whereas another sees it as a turnoff if splitting the bill.

I don't expect anyone to pay for me on the first date. I think that is out of touch for the times. This is especially true if I was the one that asked him or her out. I think the first date it is way more important to spend time getting to know each other and making sure there is something there worth a second date than worry about who should pay the bill.
