While I have no problem paying the bill, I do have a problem with being thrown under the bus at the last minute. I probably would give him the death glare and asked him why he couldn't have told me this before the date.
Why does it matter?
You should always assume you might have to pay

Would you be put off?
It could if it becomes a habit. The last guy I dated I was paying for everything; meals, excursions, bus tickets for him to come visit me, gas for me to go visit him.
