Why would my friends with benefits be upset that I’m breaking things off and try to at least remain friends?

I think he has feelings for me. Whenever we cuddle we like hold hands and tickle each other.
I basically broke things off cuz his communication was inconsistent and I felt awkward about it, I was also developing feelings and wanted more. But I didn’t tell him that, basically he texted me telling me how amazing I am and how we have chemistry and he thinks I’m great. I told him I have depression and an eating disorder that’s been a struggle and he basically said he’d want to at least be my friend and be a source of comfort rather than stress.

I feel like if he really didn’t care he’d just be like “ok sorry you feel that way. Good luck and I wish you the best!” But it seems like he still wanted a place in my life.
