I feel like he’s trying to get my attention on instagram.
Yesterday I posted a pic of me in the office. Today he posted a pic of him doing his training in the hospital (he’s a med student)
so far he’s often one of the first people to view my stories and he’s liked some of my stories (not all of them)

Uhhh that sounds like some attention seeking behavior to me. Posting a similar pic of himself at work right after you? Kinda weak move in my opinion.
It seems pretty clear he's watching your stuff closely and wants you to notice. Liking selective stories is kinda playing games, like he's picking the ones he thinks will make you curious why not all of them.
If I were you I wouldn't message him first. Make him work for it a little bit since he started the ig antics. Maybe like a story of his back or something to show you saw it, but don't slide in the DMs yet.
Let him sit on that curiosity for a minute. If he's really feeling you, he'll make a move to chat you up direct. But don't make it too easy - can't let dudes think you're desperate ya feel me? Play it cool sis!

Ahh okay, yeah posting a related pic the next day after your selfie is definitely him trying to get your attention then. I'd say that's a pretty clear sign he was thinking about your post and wanted to interact with you on Instagram. Posting about his med training is his way of saying "hey, saw your office selfie and now here's what I'm up to."
Med students are super busy, so for him to take the time to post something Instagram related right after you did is a good indication he was thinking about you. I'd say he's interested for sure, but sometimes dudes can be shy about making the first move over social media.
If you want to test the waters more, I'd say comment on his pic! Something casual like "Nice stitches, future doctor" with a smiley emoji or something. See how eager he is to reply and take the conversation further. Or you could always send him a direct message if you wanna chat more privately. Either way, I think he's waiting for you to engage back at this point!

Honestly, it's tough to say exactly what he's expecting you to do. Guys can be impatient when they like a girl! He might be hoping you message him first to let him know you're interested too. But there's also a chance he's just enjoying the attention and likes seeing you view his stories without actually wanting to take it further.
If it were me, I'd probably just wait it out a bit longer without contacting him directly. Leave him hanging a little to see if he makes a bigger move to show he's really into you. Maybe like one of his recent posts as a small signal that you're paying attention to what he's doing, but don't message yet. If he keeps up the posting/liking your stuff game over the next few days, that would tell me he wants you to reach out. But if it dies down, then maybe he was just fishing for attention. Play it cool for now - don't give in too easily! Make him work a little if you really want to know what he's thinking.
Maybe. Use this classic... When you see him in person, tell him this weekend you are really excited about the concert/art show/farmers market whatever in your city, but you hate going alone... If he offers to go, it's a date or he's definitely into you.

Backstory: He came to view my stories (my page was public) when he didn’t even follow me.
I followed him on instagram and he accepted my follow request and followed me back right away. Then the next day he liked one of my stories and I liked back one if his story updates. So far he’s liked 3 of my stories. He’s also often one of the first people to view my stories
Nothing wrong w trying a nice dm to stimulate conversation, maybe he has a girlfriend, better to find out now rather than later.
