Should I dump him?

Been dating for 6 and a half years. I've made educational and financial progress. He doesn't have a job or car. He says he works for himself and has money put away but can't afford to pay bills on time. When we go on dates I have to fetch and drop him off. I love him and know he loves me, but I'm getting tired. There's no progress. Always says he's trying but I have never seen any results. Also becomes very moody sometimes and just kind of shuts down and doesn't do anything for days at a time. I really love him but I'm tired of all the broken promises.

Damn, that's a tough situation. 6 1/2 years is a long time to invest in a relationship. A few thoughts:

- It's not cool that he can't consistently pull his weight financially. Not having a stable job or way to contribute after so long would definitely be draining.

- The broken promises of "trying" but no results would make it hard to believe anything will actually change. Words are empty without actions.

- His moods and shutting down for days at a time also sounds taxing to deal with long-term. Nobody wants to feel like they're dragging their partner along.

- You've made progress in your life and career during that time, which is awesome. But makes sense you'd want a partner who's progressing with you, not holding you back.

I know you love him, but love isn't always enough, ya know? At some point you gotta think about what YOU need and whether staying is enabling a lifestyle that doesn't align with your goals anymore.

If I were you, I think I'd have one last serious talk with him about changing things for real this time, with deadlines. If nothing improves, might be time to set yourself free to find someone who can be a true equal partner. But it's your call - just do what feels right for YOUR happiness in the end.

There are some people that just cannot work a steady job. Some just get into a natural rhythm and never get out of it and some people are just not interested in work. I had a friend that was like that. She had 3 or 4 small businesses and none of them was very successful. Still she was able to take a day off in the middle of the week to go hiking or take a week off and visit her boyfriend.
She had a whole bunch of friends that were the same. I guess it is what it is.

I understand your situation believe me. You have got to have a big conversation about what you want and if he cannot or won’t to them then it’s time to cut ties. It’ll be hard but it’s what you both need.
