Gaming app on phone?

So my boyfriend and I like to play Scrabble together on the Scrabble Go app. On the app you can direct message each other. This morning I saw a notification pop up on his phone that a female player had messaged him on the app. I'm assuming they have had some sort of communication. I scrolled down, unable to open his phone, but I could also see that he was playing two other females via the notifications. Is this common? I cannot see what these messages are about but do men use these apps to talk to women? Thank you

Well, you’re gonna have to talk to your boyfriend and you have to come up with the rules in your relationship on what is allowed and not allowed as far as other women if it’s innocent playing a board online game or he shouldn’t be playing women at all.

Right but why the communication? I just don't understand the need to communicate with someone if you're just playing a word game...
