Oh man, I don't know about yours but on mine I can see a bit of the message before opening it, even if it’s just like an emoji reaction. If he has the same thing then he may be avoiding opening your message because he doesn’t want to give you an answer. It’s just avoidant no matter what, even if he couldn’t see some of the message ahead for whatever reason. Unless the text is important and it’s just you trying to open the lines of communication from him, I’d take notice of the fact he isn’t engaging and maybe that’s how much it matters to him if you two speak.

I don't know their intentions as well. I followed them and they followed back. We have history but we went for long periods of time with no contact because we ended on bad terms.

I only engaged in brief conversation with them recently. I asked them if their phone number was the same through DMS. They said yes and I proceeded to ask could I text you to them. I got no response for that.

I'm wondering if they're waiting for me to contact them or if they're simply ignoring me. I think asking for consent to text them was a bad idea but I was only showing respect because we are not on speaking terms.

Well, it is fine if you asked them their number on social media and if they give you their number then it means they are open to you contacting them but if they don't then it is a clear sign that they are not interested in you contacting them.

Just because a person likes your post on social media does not automatically mean they are interested in talking to you through any means
