In general, it is the polite thing to do.

In real life, a woman can say hello to a guy and 9 out of 10, she will get a hi back.

Reverse the roles, a guy says a hello to a girl, 9 out of 10, the girl ignores him like he's not even there.

Then women wonder why men don't approach as much anymore.
