I think a big distinction is the first time and all subsequent times after that.

The first time is quite magical. You are so close. You're a good person. She is a good person. Nothing can go wrong. It is forever... til it is not.

All subsequent times you will be less unguarded. You may love and may even be in love but there will be a cold logical part of you that looks at things far more soberly.

In this sense both guys and girls pretend they are in love because some of the time the love side dominates and other times the cold hard logic dominates under the covers undisclosed.
