It beats me. Maybe they feel like the guy/girl they like doesn’t feel the same and they fear outright rejection

That's not friendzoning. You can't friendzone someone if you don't know how they feel about you.

I meant calling a guy or a girl “your friend “ or “your G” when you know that you like him/her but you haven’t asked them out yet because you’re scared of rejection

Yeah, that's not friendzoning. That's just being scared of rejection and keeping your feelings secret. That's totally normal, and it's very common. Friendzoning is when someone tells you how they feel and you tell them that you just want to stay friends.
