Sorry for this. A guy I was talking to for the last month (who I was starting to get attached to) sent me a text last month that he needed “time”, then said I texted him too much (I texted him at the same frequency he was texting), then when I told him he should’ve have communicated that to me he basically said “that’s not my job, it’s common sense and you should have known better”, but he was texting at the same frequency and sending the same texts back and fourth to me. AITA in this situatio?

Sorry, he sent me the text last night, not last month. I was upset about the conversation with him when I wrote the question, hence all the mistakes

There is no such thing as texting to much that sounds crazy. He doesn't have to respond right away he can text back whenever he can. Sounds like a cop out to me

That’s what confuses me though. A lot of the texting was him, and he was sending me flirty, kiss face emojis, “good morning beautiful” texts, “I really like you” texts, and I was just reciprocating his interest (or so I thought). Why would he keep texting me that if he wasn’t interested. I don’t get it. I’m not saying you’re wrong, mostly just hurt and blindsided

Because I didn’t see it coming. He kept quiet about it the whole time and told me he actually enjoyed hearing from me throughout the day, and not only that but he texted me just as much. Hence why I didn’t know that it was a problem. I just feel so hurt. If he thought I was texting too much, all he had to do was tell me to stop texting so much, or tell me that he would talk to me later. That’s all

If texting was the only way to communicate and bond then I can see why you would be surprised. But didn’t you talk on the phone and FaceTime and go on dates as well?

We did go on dates. I didn’t call or FaceTime him because his hours are crazy. I work a 9 to 5 office job. He does freelance work. I just thought texting was easier because I figured if he was busy he could always just text back when he has a chance, and he also told me he enjoyed hearing from me and that he enjoyed going on dates with me, then I got that from him. All I could really do was cry.

That’s your lesson then. You tried to make it easy and relationships are never easy. You were passive in expecting him to initiate communication when you could have set up virtual dates or called him several times during the week after you got off work.

I understand the emotional side and how you saw his texting quality as a signal of his effort. But texting is too easy and shouldn’t be the basis of a new relationship.

He told you that he enjoyed hearing from you. So did you intend to be so passive?
