How do I stop setting myself on fire to keep someone else warm?

I have been there although to me the analogy isn't perfect. Its more like you put on the gas mask of the person next to you before breathing or you keep giving yourself away until you have nothing left.

The only way to stop is to begin to acknowledge the fact you can only give what you can miss, because otherwise your destroying yourself. And there is nothing wrong with not giving what you can't miss.
