Why would a guy say he’s interested then show he’s not?

I’ve been talking to this guy for weeks, but we’ve been following eachother on IG for a while due to mutual friends. He’s an artist. We went on a date at an art show and ended up making out in his car for 12 hrs. until sunrise. He tried to have sex but I said no and he was okay with that. We proceeded to make out. I thought we vibed. After the date, We talked for the next few days and then he left me on read for 2 days. I asked him if he was still interested in talking and that it’s okay if not we could still be friends. I gave him the option to opt out but he proceeded to tell me he was interested and that he’s just stressed, overwhelmed and broke otherwise he would ask me to hang out again. He said we’d hang out soon. I told him it was okay and that I’d be here if he ever needed to vent. He never messaged back after I sent that text. I figured I was being ghosted so out of embarrassment, I deleted my IG.

He called me a few days later. Right as I was about to answer the phone, he hung up, making it a missed call. I texted him, this is how our convo went:

Me: hey did you call?
Him: Yeah my bad I was doing laundry. How have you been?
Me: Oh for sure. I been good 😊 wbu?
Him: Is the social media break helping? I'm okay just struggling for the moment but I should be good after this week.
Me: Yeah, it’s been helping a lot 😌 I’m sorry to hear that, take your time and I’m here if you ever need an ear.

He swears it was butt dial but we never talked on the phone so how could it be a buttdial? My friends said that he was making up an excuse to talk to me. That’s cool and all but he hasn’t texted back since.

What do you think this means?
