What prevents a casual/friends with benefits situation from progressing to a relationship?

My best friend had this happen, his friends with benefits turned into a relationship.

I would say its about whetever you guys are conpatible outside of just sex and beeing friends. I don't know but my friend and her just kinda started hanging out a lot more than you would do in a friends with benefits they would meet nearly every evening and go on dates eventually.

In those situations I just want someone I can go to for sex sometimes. I don't want a relationship from it and all the obligations that go with that, and neither does he. When I find a guy I want to be in a relationship with, I stop my friends with benefits, and they understand because they have other friends with benefits they can continue with.

I guess some people don't learn how to really respect a friends with benefits, if the other person is okay with that kind of arrangement then why should they see it any differently?
