I am friends with a co-worker, and I really like her. We go to different colleges, but the other day we were just talking, and she tells me she had a crazy week, met a guy, went on a date, almost hooked up with him, but didn't, and then got ghosted. I was gutted to hear it, but I just smiled and poked some fun at her. In hindsight, seems like that might not have been the best way to go.

Thinking in terms of zones seems like a good way to put yourself in a bubble that has nothing to do with reality. The zones you are referring to are made up zones from shallow spheres of information like gender-based press/internet. It's a dangerous simplification, as it can make you blind to people and imprisoned in stereotypes.
Now, don't ignore these spheres altogether since many people use them to define their lives, and most probably, they will end up in shallow areas of life for this. What I mean is to reflect upon information that is presented to you, because it can define you even without our consent, as it is influence.
The only way out of the zones you refer is this:
