What does being someone's "type" mean-- how much is physical vs. personality? How often would you say or think this about someone you know?

When a man, in his prime age and ruled by his testosterone tells you (or any girl for that matter) that you are his type, it simply means that he is trying by all means to get into your pants. There is not many other ways to understand that phrase.

It is obvious that he realized that you have a crush on him and by indirectly confessing to a friend, he has secured his move with you. He gets you where he wants you to be without directly confessing it to you.
