Do people usually cheat down?

My boyfriend cheated on me with a woman in his friend group (apparently, he did not tell her about me). I looked her up on social media and she is attractive (she models), is quite educated, has a great career, has a great group of friends, and seems like a well-adjusted person. I’m just wondering why her now that I know that she isn’t ugly, dumb, etc.

It's rare that people technically "cheat down," but there could be a few things at play here:

- Opportunity - This woman was probably more readily available since she's in his friend group. Proximity makes cheating easier sometimes, even if other options exist.

- Variety - Some dudes are just never satisfied and always want something "different." Could be he saw her as a change from you even if she's not necessarily "better."

- Ego boost - Even attractive, successful women sometimes crave validation. Maybe she liked the attention from him and he liked feeling wanted, even if just physically/momentarily.

- Overlooking flaws - It's easy to put someone on a pedestal briefly and not notice red flags. Grass is greener syndrome. No one's actually perfect.

- Excuses - Cheaters will rationalize anything to relieve guilt. Telling himself she's superior is an ego defense, not necessarily reality.

I wouldn't take it as him trading up necessarily. He screwed up - could've happened with anyone susceptible in his orbit. Says more about his character flaws than your worth. Best to move on and find someone better who won't hurt you like that. You deserve way more respect!

I think it depends on their intention. If they are planning to leave their partner, they definitely won’t cheat down. If they just want a quick fling, they either cheat down or don’t care. by the way most people cheat for the thrill, rarely it has to do with the look.

It never has anything to do with the one who is being betrayed. The cheater still loves and cares for them but in all sincerity and seriousness, does not want to hurt them either.

I think women usually cheat up. They cheat on their husband/boyfriend because they have a chance to get plowed by a more attractive or higher-status man.

I think men usually cheat with whoever will cheat with them, up down or sideways.

But regardless of who your boyfriend cheated with, or why, he's still an a**hole for cheating on you.
