I know a girl who has done this. They ended up going out later but before they did, she was totally encouraging him to date other girls

Sadly, yes. I have this stupid nice person complex where I think that I'm not good enough, but I want the best for others. I almost missed out on my late husband because of it.

There's a guy I have always liked since I was probably 12 years old, but I have never ever once given the slightest hint that I like him because all the other girls were all over him and I didn't want to be like those girls (trust me, he was not a ladies man type. He's just extremely handsome; like, movie star handsome). I would totally encourage him to go out with other girls because I'm a chicken and I friendzoned myself, LOL.

I think you got some sort of really bizarre female masochinostic “cuckolding” issue.

Like you are looking to fulfill intense feelings of longing, regret and jealousy if you ultimately see the person you liked move on to date one of your friends.

I recommend you get counseling over this. I think something like this happened to you in your early teenage years. You likely interacted with some boy you had a crush on. You then introduced him to one of your friends and he ended up dating her instead (not what you anticipated) .

Then you got an emotional overload of jealousy/regret out of it and that was your first “romance” experience. So now you are trying to recreate that dynamic to relive your childhood.

And so I kindof maintained my friendship with her and welcomed her girlfriend into our circles with open arms

Maybe that girl does it because it's sort of subconsciously her way of showing interest in the guy's love life, without having to say she's attracted to him.

Or maybe she's hoping the guy will say, "No, I don't want to date her, I want to date YOU."
