Historically, a man asks the woman's father for permission to marry his daughter. That was done primarily to ensure that the proper dowry was agreed to before the marriage.

Today, some men ask, as a courtesy, but most do not.

I would let her know first and foremost, and then I'd let her parents know about my intentions with her

then I would let my parents know about it, but I don't need to ask their permission or something, like that, it is my decision alone
