Well we dont have Thanksgiving here, at least not in the capacity its done in the U. S. Its not a feast here, just a regular church day thing. Its not even a state holyday.
About the fridge thing quite the opposite, we Dont waste food just because a number says it could be over. In germany we dont have an expiration date but a "at least good until" Date. Rarely that is actually an expiration date.
I often buy a thing called "rettertüte" which Translates to Savior bag, which some stores have. Its a collestion of fruits amd vegetables that they can't guarantee are good or that will spoil soon. The bag is heavily discounted though and most of the time if you use it the same day or a day after you get crazy discounts for mostly still good food. Worst case put all the good fruit into the mixer and make a fruitsmoothie.
