Guys are not generally "just being nice" if they seek out your company unless you're their sister or mom. If he seeks you out in groups and spends time with you, he's interested. Usually there's a pattern and you can observe a guy either directly approach (walking straight over to you as soon as he sees you) or indirectly approach (smoothly navigating around the room to "accidentally" end up close to you).

If you're scared or uncertain, just say something like "Hey, on Saturday I'm going to be [insert activity]. If you're around, you should totally come!" Make sure this isn't an activity that your entourage of friends are going to be doing with you, because you are testing to see if he wants to hang out with you in particular. It gives an out for both of you; you can save face by not directly asking if he wants to date you, and he can either choose to get out of it ("Shoot, I've got other plans") or accept ("That'd be awesome!") or delay ("Man, I can't this weekend, but what about?").

It's a relief to guys when girls take some initiative. I had to be pretty direct with the man I married and he was still not sure I was interested, even with the blatant clues I was giving him, LOL.

Guys who are not interested tend to be uptight and avoidant. They find a way out ASAP, and it's fairly obvious when a guy is desperately wanting to get away from a girl he definitely isn't interested in. He has a pained expression, and is looking anywhere else than at her.

Be direct that’s the best way to know just ask him and if you’re interested express it. Don’t wait too long because never assume you’re the only person whose attracted. If he finds someone else if someone else doesn’t find him. Attraction can come and go easily just as fast as it can arrive it can disparate.

It would be impossible to know with complete certainty. Body language , eye contact , etc are are signs but if you don’t know what you’re looking for you would miss them easily. Most guys are fairly direct unless the shy type in which case you are likely going to be direct or lean into him in such a way that he would realize and so have confidence to let you know.
