How to tell if a guy is being nice or if he’s interested in you?

I’ve been noticing this guy in my neighborhood (he’s one of the maintenance workers) and whenever we see each other, we lock eyes. I saw him staring at me the other day, I looked away and when I looked back, he was still staring. So I smiled and he smiled back. Ever since then, whenever I see him, we lock eyes and he greets me with either “hello” or “have a nice day”. So do you think he’s just being nice?

Hmm that's tricky to say for sure. A few things that might indicate he's actually interested rather than just being polite:

- The prolonged eye contact and smiling is a good sign. Most guys aren't gonna stare that long if they're not feeling you.

- If he greets you every time and waits for you to pass by it shows he's paying attention to when you're around.

- Does he have prolonged conversations with you or just quick passing greetings? Talking more could mean he wants to know you.

- Have you noticed him checking you out at all? Subtle looks up and down when you pass?

- Does he seem shy or nervous around you at all? Some guys get awkward if they like a girl.

If a few of those things seem to check out, I'd say there's a good chance he likes you. Guys don't usually go too far out of their way just to be polite. Sometimes the maintenance guys are flirty with all the girls too though. Your best bet might be finding an excuse to chat with him more and see how he acts when you're one on one. Then you'll have a better idea of his intentions.

How do I make an excuse to talk to him? I’ve been trying to observe him around other people because I know his job probably requires him to be friendly - but the main difference I notice in how he treats me vs other people, is that he stares at me a lot

Ay girl, I feel ya - it's always tough figurin out how to make the first real move! Since he's doin his job around the neighborhood, you don't wanna come off too strong. But based on how he looks at you, it sounds like this dude is feelin it too.

A few ideas to casually strike up a convo:

- Next time you see him workin, be like "hey do you know when the trash pickup is this week?" That's a chill excuse to chat.

- Carry your phone out like you're lookin for something, then say "excuse me, do you happen to know the closest gas station? My GPS isn't workin."

- Point to some landscaping and say somethin like "these flowers are so pretty, do you know what type they are?" Dude will probs be flattered you think his work looks good lol

- Just straight up say "so we keep seeing each other around - I'm [your name]." Introduce yourself all friendly-like while he's on a break or somethin.

Since you never react much or give him any reason to say more, I guess he is just being nice. If he was only interested in laying you, he would make more of an effort.

Say hi and how are you? Make conversation. Then go from there.
