In the past I was jealous about his friend and he said “No, she’s just like family.” - I don’t want to be in the same category.

Might have been. Don’t remember the exact context, as I was caught off guard. He said it after I pointed out his behavior, that his family often mentions too. And he said his family also has problems with it, and then he said I am like him family and I laughed and he smiled and said “ haha cute when you raise your chin up like that as I say you are like family.”

I'm guessing more the latter as he seems to be trying to vet you for long term.
