Have you ever come across a scam (that you hopefully didn’t fall for) that was so well done you can’t help be impressed with scammers ingenuity?

A few months ago I came across across a very well done dating app scam. The scammer was very careful to use the following details:

  • A model who was attractive yet believable looking. Young (30) but not too young.
  • Natural iPhone photos. Show pics of the model doing yoga in a gym.
  • Started a conversation that was typical for women messaging guys on dating apps. Real women usually only say “hi” or something else one wordy when first messaging.
  • Friendly conversation but not sexual. Genuine attractive women very rarely bring up sex first on a dating app when chatting with guys. She responded to my messages in a tone that’s typical for women.
  • Had a real phone number with a area code to back up her story. She claimed to be a tax accountant from Seattle. She texted number with a Seattle phone number.
  • The model the scammer used was a 30 year old professional Asian woman. It’s common for young Asian people to work in tech, finance, entrepreneurship.
  • Scammer kept the conversation seemingly genuine for a week until they brought up the con pitch (would you like to invest in crypto?)

How I knew it was scam:

  • Scammer deleted their dating profile app a few hours after they texted me.
  • They made excuses twice in a row for not being able to meet up for coffee. Women can be wishy washy on dating apps but she showed little interest in meeting in person.
  • When I asked her where she lived she brought up a neighborhood name that’s rarely mentioned in the local vernacular
  • Once she brought up the “crypto investment” idea she kept talking about it.

The second she brought up about crypto investing I was 99.99% sure it was a scam. When she asked again knew for sure. Didn’t do it.

But I have to admit it was very impressed with the scammers ingenuity. This person probably could make a decent living with legitimate work. I laughed in my final message and said “you are one sneaky creative son of a b*tch. How many guys have you scammed so far? I got to admit I was impressed with your bs set up”.
