What should I do if my guy friend doesn’t want to be friends with me right because I broke his heart?

My guys friend admitted that he STILL likes me after all these years. He said he likes me since the first day he saw me back in second grade. He didn’t really have feelings for me until 8th grade. He always asked me to dances, prom or whatever. He NEVER asked other girls. Never. He never gave them a chance. I went to the dance with him twice but only as a friend. He thought we were a couple but I told him no. I went to the senior prom with my crush which was a dream come true but it ended in a disaster as he kept abandoning me for his friends, and left with another girl. Anyways yesterday he asked me to be his girlfriend by going out on a date. He said his feelings for me will NEVER change and I’m the only girl he’s EVER loved.
I politely rejected him and he was heartbroken. I apologize and asked we can still be friends and he said he doesn’t know if he can and hung up on me. My girl pals said I really broke his heart and I should have given him a chance on a REAL date and school dances don’t count. He OBVIOUSLY is still in love with me. What was I supposed to do, lie?
My parents said I broke his heart after he said I was his girlfriend when dad asked f he had a girlfriend. My parents even knew he likes me. It was a joke. My dad said hash a good man I just let go and truth to be told, I like him deep down and my heart will be after him. I blush when his name is mentioned. No I was embarrassed.
