Why do people become defensive when their brain sees something differently than another person's?

People said she phrased it wrong. After she explained it, she fixed it to what the general public was saying. However, I understood her without the edit. If I were in her position, I wouldn't have changed it. I read it as the black girl thought the white boy was out of her league, but to me, he's a loser. The black girl needs saving because she's blinded by what the white boy says. The same message got across to me but by different means.
