Do the best relationships start off as friendship?

I heard that in a chick flick; but the fact was I was bombing out so badly with men for a while, that I decided to try to be friends first, but make it clear early on that I'm interested in more later. I'm new to doing things this way. Does it work, or is it better to differentiate friends from lovers, immediately?

I find it infinitely better and safer to start off with befriending everyone, including when I'm romantically curious about her, no pressure this way, everything feels much more organic. And if my curiosity switches to romantic interest later, then it's nice too because we'll have a lot of time to understand what we really think of each other. And what we want.

you can't be friends with someone who you are in love with. Friendship is platonic love, not romantic love. Once you have feelings, you both are no longer friends, regardless of how much you like to call them your "friend"

The longest and healthiest relationships are always like "best friends with romantic benefits" the more you get to know them, the better understanding you will have of if you are compatible with them. Jumping into relationships with people you barely know (if at all) are almost always the most unstable relationships, with a high chance of trauma.
