Would you date someone with bad credit?

Like chronically bad credit, the car is one day away from getting repossessed, collection agencies are calling every day, the phone is getting cut off, and the landlord keeps changing the locks because rent is overdue. But otherwise they are a good person.

Experiences with partners with vastly different financial situations are also welcomed in responses. Tell us your story if you’ve been with someone with very good or very bad finances.

I wouldn't if I was aware of the situation.

My wife of 32 years recently passed away.
I've discovered that she had hidden many tens of thousands of dollars in high interest debt from me.

Some of the debt was in her name only, so I think and hope that I'm not responsible for that part, but I am still responsible for a huge chunk of debt that I wasn't aware of.

Shortly after we were first married, I found out that she had a significant load of debt from when she was single.
I bailed her out of that.

Over the years, I came to realize that she had a very different way of viewing money than I do.

I should have kept a closer watch on what was going on with our finances, but I didn't.
My bad.

People can be very cagy in keeping things hidden from their partners.

I've forgiven my late wife's fiscal irresponsibility, but I still have to deal with repaying it.
I'm not happy about that.

So, how does one know if a potential partner is fiscally irresponsible if they go to extremes to hide it from you?

As someone else mentioned, chronically bad fiscal management doesn't come alone or pop up from thin air, there is something psychological going on that explains this practical outcome.

Plus the way you put it, examples you gave, are extreme, it's not just bad credit you're talking about, it's total chaos on a practical aspect. And if it is like that on a practical aspect, then it certainly is like that on a psychological aspect, which makes dating rather impossible lol

Yes, and oftentimes it is something hidden that she isn’t willing to confront or talk about. I had one who had an insane amount of Apple in-app purchases, it turned out she was online gambling. Another spent all her money on alcohol, to the point where credit cards were maxed out.

When it is hidden it truly gets more complicated, though if someone was spending big bucks for alcohol I think it's not going to be hard to notice the effects lol. Gambling is another sad scenario, I have one friend very much addicted to that, dreaming of cash to compensate for lack of love

I prefer not to. I have great credit.

Sounds very stressful. I try to be diligent in managing my own finances so I'd prefer not to stress over someone else's.

Sure. As long as they trying to change it. My ex has bad credit and it didn't affect our relationship. He was making efforts to not have bad credit.
