Is my boyfriend’s follow–unfollow behavior on Instagram a red flag?

I noticed that my boyfriend follows random girls on Instagram. So I asked one girl to send him a follow request, and he accepted it and followed her back. He didn't send any text to her, though. What bothers me is that he follows some girls who have less than 1k followers, and they have a public account, and those girls do not follow him back. He then just unfollows them after a few days. What's happening?

At first, I thought that there are some people who just send requests randomly, and when you follow them back, they just unfollow you. Could this be the situation, or is he looking out for options but no luck? Is it a red flag or is it normal?

Honestly, the follow–unfollow pattern does sound a little suspicious, especially if he’s repeatedly following random girls who don’t know him and then unfollowing after they don’t engage. It can look like he’s seeking attention, validation, or testing his chances rather than just casually using Instagram.

At the same time, he didn’t message the girl your friend used to test him, so it’s not automatic proof that he’s cheating or seriously pursuing someone. I’d say the bigger issue is whether this behavior makes you uncomfortable and whether he’s being respectful of the relationship.

It’s probably better to talk openly with him instead of silently investigating, because otherwise it can turn into anxiety and constant checking.
