How can I tell my friend I want to date him without making it awkward?

Like this, "I don't want to date you".

I'm not being a smartass either. Guys typically do not ask women out unless they've (the woman) displayed some form of interest other than friendship. You could have even displayed it to one of his uglier friends (because to a young men that would mean HE is in play). See you have to understand that young men are not experienced enough to understand a woman's attraction to men follows no logical, discernable pattern. This is something they have to learn as they go.

What YOU can do from this point (after you reject him that is, and you HAVE TO reject him!). Is try to pinpoint what it was that you said or did that sent that message that you wanted to be asked out so as to NOT repeat this. Because SOME women do this INTENTIONALLY. Because those women are narcissitic b****es that like baiting men. And UNDERSTANDABLY. A guy will get annoyed maybe even angry with being led on. He CAN'T know that you're NOT that person (assuming you're not that person).

He's a big boy. Just be honest with him. Don't sugarcoat it. Guys are used to rejection he can take it.👍

You ask him on a date. It doesn't have to be a production. Invite him to join you for coffee or lunch or dinner, depending on how well you know him. If you've known him a while, and are past coffee or lunch, invite him to your place for dinner. That's a very strong sign of interest, almost an invitation to bed.

There's no way to start a relationship without some chance it will get awkward. But if no one ever asks, nothing ever happens. I've been there and done that and let opportunities slip away. I hope it works out for you.

That's bad advice. Just tell him not interested. If she's TRULY his friend and not a pretender he WILL understand. Holding his hand will just likely confuse him.
Generally guys only get angry for 2 reasons. Either 1. He's got fragile ego. In which case some rejection will do him some good to thicken that skin. Or 2. Because he was led on. If he was led on, then what's the problem with him giving it back to her? If it was just a misunderstanding and they're truly friends this WILL NOT change anything. If they're not really friends then none of this matters.

I understand by "holding his hand" you're wanting to comfort him. I was laughing, i wasn't laughing at you. I'm just saying it's better to be firm. But continue to be a good friend to him. Understand he might want some space after being rejected to get right in his head what just happened. Give him that space. Just think of how you'd want a guy to treat you if the roles were reversed.👍

Know I want to be more than friends, I would start by gentle touchig/hand holding. Heading leading towards his shoulder.
