How to get over someone who is not treating you well?

I’m stuck in what some may call a “situationship”. I met this guy who I’ve gotten along with so well. He was consistently showing me interest, complimenting me, telling me he wants to date me one day. We’ve kissed and hugged and shared many secrets. He was gentle, caring, and really seemed to like me. He even pushed hard to meet my family and impress them, which did happen.

Then recently, it switched. He’s been more friend-like. The compliments stopped. The dates stopped. The enthusiasm stopped. But he still calls me everyday. And I couldn’t help but cry when I told him that I felt he was treating me differently. I’m sensitive :/. He reacted with frustration, vague answers, and compared me to his ex multiple times (despite me telling him that it hurts to hear that). In the middle of me crying, he would say he’s tired in an angry voice and would go to bed. But then the next morning would act like nothing happened. He even spam called me one night just to say good night, and left a message saying he’s doesn’t know if I’m upset with him or not. I was just taking an exam but I don’t understand why he would spam call me if he wasn’t interested in some way. So many mixed signals.

That is all to say, I KNOW he’s not treating me well. But it’s so hard to get out of it. There was so much potential. But I want to be treated with respect and I don’t want to pursue someone who isn’t sure about me. It’s hurting me and I’m scared to end it. I’m scared of his reaction, I’m scared of the hurt I’ll feel. I’ve been going through a very difficult time lately (unrelated to this) and I’m worried this will make my despair much worse.
